Pouliot looking to reunite with WHL coach July 22, 2014

With NHL training camps around the corner, Derrick Pouliot is holding out hope that he can recover from shoulder surgery in time to fight for a spot with the Penguins.  Drafted 8th overall by Pittsburgh in 2012, the 20-year-old defenseman had a huge year for the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL in 2013-14, finishing 3rd in the regular season for points by a D-man with 70, and 1st in the playoffs with 32. The offensive D-man may also have a leg up on the competition.  Pittsburgh’s new head coach Mike Johnston was Pouliot’s coach in Portland, and their familiarity would appear to be an advantage for the young star’s development going forward.
