Toronto Maple Leafs: The sensitive side of Dion Phaneuf February 15, 2013 – Toronto, Ontario - Paul Hunter, Toronto Sun, Feature Reporter
At Maple Leafs home games, no matter how fierce the on-ice action, a kinder, gentler side of hockey plays out in a luxury suite tucked high in the northwest corner of the Air Canada Centre.
There, in a blue-and-white themed private box decorated with a framed Dion Phaneuf jersey and a poster of the Toronto defenceman, patients from The Hospital for Sick Children gaze down with their families.
They are there as Phaneuf’s guests. He has paid for the tickets, food, Leafs T-shirts, flags and hats as he does for every home game. The price tag has topped $250,000 since Phaneuf arrived in Toronto from Calgary during the 2010-11 season. When he can, he’ll also pay a visit after the game, as he did when the Leafs hosted Philadelphia earlier this week.
