MATTHEW SCHAEFER MAKES HISTORY IN NHL DEBUT October 09, 2025
New York Islanders’ first overall pick Matthew Schaefer became the youngest defenseman in NHL history to record a point in his debut, registering an assist at just 18 years and 34 days old. Schaefer set up a Johnathan Drouin goal during the team’s season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He logged nearly seven minutes of ice time in the opening period and added a takeaway, making a strong early impression.
