Ryan Craig proves his worth on and off the ice May 23, 2013
Ryan Craig’s year in the AHL was a successful one, in that he scored 20 goals and assisted on 27 others in 70 games. However, this does not tell the whole story about what he meant to not only his team, but to the entire Columbus Blue Jackets organization.
Nominated for the Fred Hunt Award, which goes to the player who “best exemplifies sportsmanship, determination and dedication to hockey,” Craig is as close to a shoe-in for the trophy as you can get.
Players such as Ryan Johansen, Cody Goloubef, and Tim Erixon, who spent time with Craig on Columbus’ AHL affiliate Springfield Falcons, would all attest to the positive influence the Abbottsford, British Columbia native had on them.
“I’ve never played with a guy like that,” said defenseman Cody Goloubef, who has played for Columbus and Springfield this season. “If somebody is injured, he’s the guy to follow up and make sure you’re OK. If you’re in a slump, he’s the one to talk you out of it. If you’re frustrated by any situation, he’s the one to seek you out and help you through it.”
