Martin’s return to Long Island an emotional one November 01, 2016
Matt Martin returned home with his new team the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, and despite the fact he was suited up in the opposing team’s uniform, the Brooklyn faithful gave the ex-Islander a standing ovation. Born in Windsor, Ontario, Martin played six full seasons on Long Island, and was loved by teammates and fans alike for his tireless effort, on and off the ice.
Known for leading the NHL in hits for the last six years, the 27-year-old winger developed a unique relationship with his adopted home, dedicating a large portion of his time on Long Island to helping those in need. He has and continues to support causes such as the Boomer Esiason Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis and the Association for Children with Down Syndrome. In 2015, Martin created the Matt Martin Foundation, a charity aimed at giving back to the many causes Martin feels passionately about.
